Amsterdam Weekend Guide – June 9-11

After writing about all things cultural and lifestyle for over a decade in the UK, Jayne switched the rainy cobbles of Manchester for the equally rainy cobbles of Amsterdam in search of fresh adventures, new discoveries and Dutch beer. The weekend is almost upon us, and while the recent heatwave might be (temporarily) over, we can still hope for enough sunshine to tempt us out to one of these great events. Read on for our pick of things to do over the weekend of 9-11 June in Amsterdam.

Bacchus Wine festival

The first of two wine-filled weekends takes place this weekend at the Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest). Sample wine from around the world in a magical woodland setting as Amsterdam’s finest wine merchants present their top 20 varieties, or take your palate on a guided taste tour with an expert sommelier at one of the test tables or tents. It’s all soundtracked by an eclectic live music line-up, with food served up by a variety of favourite street food trucks and a pop-up restaurant headed up by a different chef each day. Tickets start at €15 for regular entry plus a wine glass.

Busker’s Inn Street Music Festival

This Sunday sees the Volkshotel overtaken by buskers for a lively street music festival. From the basement to the rooftop, street music performers from all over the world will perform live in a range of locations, including hotel rooms, meeting rooms and corridors. Expect to hear everything from Celtic folk to classical and bluegrass to Balkan played live in unusual places by passionate performers.  Admission is free, but bring some money to pop into the buskers’ hats at the end of their sets.

Foam Fusion

As part of the celebrations to mark its 15th anniversary, Amsterdam’s photography museum holds a three day multidisciplinary  festival this weekend. The festival revolves around the theme of collaboration, so expect exchanges between diverse practitioners and artists from different disciplines as Foam explores beyond the limits of photography. The programme features surprising presentations and performances, a variety of round table discussions, artist talks and workshops, with each day being rounded off by music and cocktails. Pure Markt

Pure Markt Amsterdamse Bos

The roaming Sunday market turns up at Amstelpark this weekend for another day of food, drink and great local produce. Taste your way around a delicious selection of food trucks and stalls selling everything from Dutch cheese to Surinam roti and freshly chucked oysters, and wash it all down with an organic beer, wine or freshly roasted coffee. There’ll be live music, a choice of (hopefully) sunny terraces and a solar powered carousel for little ones.

BAUT Oyster Fest

Pop-up restaurant BAUT invites you to shuck the night away this Friday with €1 oysters all night. Now located in Amsterdam East (after stints in south and central Amsterdam), the roaming restaurant – this time called ‘BAUT Paradijs’ – can now be found in an old gas factory in Amsterdam East until the end of the year. Head down on Friday night for oysters galore, drinks and DJs on the terrace from 5pm.
