Amsterdam Weekend Guide – June 30 – July 2
Once again, we’ve got another busy weekend coming up in Amsterdam, and – as always – there’s an event for everyone.
This weekend’s highlights are an Australian circus troupe, an electro-fuelled festival, a Surinamese celebration of freedom, a quirky creative hotspot in Noord and an urban soul band at one of Amsterdam’s cosiest waterfront cafes.
Now in its seventh edition, PITCH Festival is a celebration of all things electronic music, with a strong focus on eclectic live acts. Local and international artists alike will be strutting their stuff across the event’s three stages at the NDSM Wharf. The event comes to a close with the annual PITCH Festival Afterparty, which boasts its own line-up of DJs and live acts. This year it’s taking place at Pllek, a neat little post-industrial hotspot overlooking the River IJ and its banks.
Australia’s most thrilling and chilling circus-cabaret is setting up shop in the Dutch capital this summer, with a show packed with mind-bending illusions, death-defying manoeuvres, raunchy routines and a whole range of talented musicians and dancers. The line-up features American fire breather and sword swallower Heather Holliday, Canadian acrobat Evelyne Allard, and Chinese pole master and beatboxer Mikael Bres.
Keti Koti Festival
Keti Koti – ‘Broken Chains’ in Surinamese – marks the anniversary of the Surinamese people’s emancipation from slavery in Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles (1 July 1863). The festival sees the city’s residents and visitors of all nationalities coming together in the stunning Oosterpark to celebrate the diverse and rich Surinamese culture – now a key part of Amsterdam’s identity. Expect a cosy – or gezellig, as the Dutch would say – celebration of the people, style, music and food of Suriname.
The Butcher Social Club
The Butcher Social Club is undeniably one of the city’s hippest hotspots, and that’s saying something. The spacious bar on the ground floor of the iconic A’DAM Tower has some of the best burgers and coolest cocktails in town, and it’s kitted out with pool tables, ping pong tables, arcade machines and pinball, so there’s no shortage of things to keep you entertained. Well, that’s not really an issue anyway: this Saturday they’ve got a soulful band playing an array of the jazziest and funkiest tunes. And from midnight onwards, the resident DJ will be spinning old-school hip-hop, the cheesiest tunes of the Nineties and Italo-disco.
Urban Soul Band at Hannekes Boom
Hannekes Boom is one of the city’s best waterfront cafes to chill out on a lazy Sunday; its spectacular views of the water, quirky salvaged furniture, diverse crowd and shack-like layout all meld together to make for one of the cosiest spots in the city. Couple that with a day of groovy soul, pop and funk covers, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a fantastic way to round off your weekend in Amsterdam.
