Christmas Special Amsterdam Weekend Guide: December 22-24

Always driven by a good story… before beginning his adventure in Amsterdam, Alex worked as a broadcast journalist for the BBC in his home city of Manchester, and then spent several years as a senior reporter for the Manchester Evening News, where he went on to manage the newspaper’s video department. You’ll either find him in a bar supping some potent Dutch brews, discovering new places to eat and be merry, or cycling around Amsterdam still deliriously happy he lives in such an amazing place.

It’s Christmaaaaaaassssss! Yes. The most wonderful time of the year is, in fact, right now. And so to celebrate the fact that everything is about as magical as things can get right now, we’ve got a special edition Weekend Guide. Here we showcase only the very, very, very best things you can do this weekend to make you feel as festive as possible bar pulling Santa’s sleigh while wearing a reindeer outfit and a bulbous red nose.

So this week we’ve got two spectacular Christmas festivals which help transform different parts of the city into proper winter wonderlands, an amazing tribute to some of Sweden’s best ever popstars, a Christmas show featuring good old Scrooge, and Die Hard (obviously!).

Ice* Village Amsterdam

Ice Village Amsterdam

There’s a host of festive markets taking place in the city during December, but perhaps the most spectacular is the Ice* Village Amsterdam event – which sees the city’s Museumplein transform into a charming Christmas village, complete with an ice rink, live entertainment, market stalls and plenty of festive food and drink to keep you warm. Get your skates on and look graceful on the ice (or not), or play some human bowling in one of the most breath-taking Christmas events in Amsterdam.

Fri, Sat and Sun // Museumplein // 11:00 – 20:00 // Free // Website

Amsterdamse Winterparade

Amsterdam Winterparade

Not to be confused with the culinary performance event with a similar name, the Amsterdamse Winterparade is a festive extravaganza complete with market stalls, a fifty-metre Ferris wheel, an ice skating rink and thousands of fairy lights. Whether you’re belting out a Christmas classic at the karaoke bar, tasting some special brews in the beer village, soaking in the jacuzzis (yes, really) or snuggling up with a seasonal film at the Christmas cinema, this is one festive festival truly unlike any other.

Fri, Sat and Sun // RAI Amsterdam // 10:00 – 02:00 // €7.50 // Website

Die Hard @ LAB 111 Cinema

Die Hard

Right, let’s end the debate right now: Die Hard is a Christmas film. Not even just a film either, but a bona fide classic.  I mean, OK, so it is about two odd hours of Bruce Willis shooting or blowing people up. But who doesn’t get a warm fuzzy feeling when the late Alan Rickman’s magnificent Hans Gruber falls from the top of the fictional Nakatomi Plaza, or when Willis is reunited with his kidnapped wife. So, for a truly special Christmas experience, get yourself down to Lab 111 this weekend, where the film is playing on Saturday and Sunday night.

Sat and Sun // LAB 111 // Sat: 21:15, Sun: 19:00 // €8.50 // Website

ABBA Gold – Christmas special show

ABBA tribute in Amsterdam

If there was ever a band to truly sum up that magical feeling that the Christmas period can make you feel, then ABBA are surely it. Of course, the group’s most famous song about the festive period isn’t actually about Christmas, but new year. It’s called, for those of you who don’t know, Happy New Year. But don’t be a Grinch and split hairs here. Instead, head down to this special show and see one of the Swedish pop group’s best tribute bands – including members of the world-famous ‘Mamma Mia’ West End musical – put on a Christmas show dedicated to the legendary popstars.

Sat // Q-Factory // 20:30 // €25 // Website //

The Christmas show – A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Show

For an unforgettable magical experience this Christmas, catch this stage show at the Ziggo Dome dedicated to all things merry. This year’s performance is a musical take on ‘A Christmas Carol’, featuring beautiful scenery, a cast of famous Dutch actors and a host of your favourite Christmas songs. Be warned, Dutch will be the primary language during these shows, but it’s the perfect place to practice if your Nederlands isn’t quite top-notch, and young ones will no doubt still love this Christmas spectacle.

Sat and Sun // Ziggo Dome // Various times // from €39.50 Up to €54.50 // Website
