Amsterdam Weekend Guide: New Year’s Eve special
There are hundreds of parties and club nights taking place in Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve, from elegant black-tie affairs to behemoth warehouse raves. And if you don’t fancy dancing the night away, of course you can enjoy the city’s amazing new year fireworks display while dining out in one of its incredible restaurants and cafes, or simply walk around and enjoy the celebratory atmosphere.
Whatever you want to do, we’ve picked out a range of events which will help you celebrate the new year in style.
Party like a proper Amsterdammer
There’s a good reason why Amsterdam is so well-known for its spectacular club nights and DJs: the Dutch know how to throw a proper party. And what better time to do so than at the start of a new year. Popular places to dance your way into 2018 include the annual Awakenings bash at Gashouder and Loveland NYE at Mediahaven. You can also find plenty more New Year’s Eve parties in our NYE event guide.
Dine-out with a spectacular view of the city’s fireworks
The fireworks in Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve are really extraordinary, and to really appreciate the full spectacle it’s best to find somewhere high up to enjoy them. And what could be better than watching the incredible display from one of the city’s many bars or restaurants with panoramic views. Mr Porter at the W Hotel, Moon or Madam in the A’Dam Tower, Canvas at the Volkshotel or the Sky Lounge at the Hilton Doubletree will all make for a memorable New Year’s Eve.
Experience a night like no other in Amsterdam
If you’ve left it too late to get into a sky-high restaurant or bar (and you’re feeling brave), then you could soak up the craziness that ensues around the city’s streets and canals on New Year’s Eve. The locals can get a little bit gung-ho with their fireworks on New Year’s Eve, so as soon as it goes dark you’ll find them being let off on every bridge and open space. But brave the journey and you can discover unofficial street parties at the city’s main squares such as Dam Square, Rembrandtplein, Nieuwmarkt and Leidseplein, where crowds of visitors and locals gather to ring in the new year with beer tents, music and fireworks. But please proceed with caution.
