Liberation Day Festivals

Vrijland Festival

Every year on 4 May, the Netherlands pauses to remember the victims of World War II, followed by a national party on 5 May when the whole country celebrates its freedom. Join the fun this Friday at one of the freedom festivals in the city centre – such as the Vrije Westen music festival in Westerpark or the Liberation Day Festival at the Homomonument. For a more hedonistic celebration of freedom, head to the beach at Blijburg aan Zee for the massive Vrijland beach festival (pictured), where you can dance all day with the sand between your toes.

Poster for the tour of Le Chat Noir - Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, 1896

Take a tour through the boulevards of Fin de Siecle Paris at the Van Gogh Museum this weekend. The Prints in Paris exhibition includes more than 1,800 art prints dating from this time of glamour and prosperity, when printmaking soared to the level of high art and posters of La Chat Noir and the Moulin Rouge gained the iconic status they have today. If you’re feeling rather ooh la la after immersing yourself in the romance of this decadent age, the nearby Conservatorium hotel is an elegant spot for a glass of Champagne and some fancy cakes.
