Amsterdam Weekend Guide – June 23-25
Summer has well and truly hit Amsterdam. You know what that means: it’s time for the annual festival frenzy and a well-timed heatwave.
As always, there’s a wide range of awesome events happening this weekend in the Dutch capital; from a boozy beer bash to a refined roots revelry, there really is something for everyone.
Amsterdam Roots Festival
This internationally renowned world-music festival never fails to bring the best up-and-coming and established acts to Amsterdam. Expect eclectic acts from every corner of the globe – from Columbia and Chile to Zimbabwe and Palestine. The festival comes to an end on Sunday with the always-epic Roots Open Air party, which sees thousands flocking to the picturesque Oosterpark for an evening of cultured music and entertainment. There’s even a variety of international circus performers this year – as well as a fitting selection of workshops and intimate acoustic sets.
Sloten Bier Festival
When the sun comes out, you can’t beat an ice-cold craft beer or two (or three – or four), so the summer’s beer festivals are always well-worth a visit. This weekend’s highlight is the Sloten Bier Festival. Now in its fourth edition, the free event boasts an impressive selection of craft beers from many of Holland’s top microbreweries. This year’s brewers include Lowlander Beer, Brouwerij Kleiburg and Amsterdam Brewboys, so expect to whet your whistle on a bevvy of pale ales, bitters, blondes and more. But it’s not all about the beer; there’s a load of live music and delectable food for you to wash down with those craft beers.
Wicked Jazz Sounds Festival
Each and every year, Wicked Jazz Sounds – an Amsterdam-based music platform that promotes all things jazz – hijacks the NDSM Wharf for a one-day jazztravaganza. This year is no different, so get ready for a swanky line-up of the best jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop artists from across the world. Of course, there’ll be a whole lot of scrumptious food and drink on offer to complement all that jazz. And there’s a vinyl market, beer- and wine-tasting stalls, plus a selection of trendy art and deco designed by homegrown Amsterdam artists.
The View’s Summer Nights 2017
What better way to kickstart your summer than a sky-high shindig overlooking one of Amsterdam’s finest vistas? The View’s Summer Nights is just that: an all-night party on the 20th floor of one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, the now-iconic A’DAM Tower. Most wouldn’t typically condone staring out the window in the middle of a party, but they’ll probably let it slide at a 360-degree panoramic skybar (I mean, just look at that view in the above picture!) The DJs will be spinning a hearty mix of nu-disco, funk and real-house tunes. Oh, and the event is for 21-and-overs only, and the dress code’s decent-ish, so there’ll be no teens or bothersome stag-party types.
Amsterdam Summer Break Festival
Let’s face it: it wouldn’t be a summer weekend in Amsterdam without at least one dance festival. But Amsterdam Summer Break Festival isn’t your typical techno romp; its South American-fiesta vibe helps set it apart from the pack – then some. The line-up features an array of artists that meld dance music with Latin influences, along with a modest helping of traditional musicians, making for one varied and innovative day of music. An exotic offering of South American food and drinks complete the overall Latin American feel; think empanadas, tropical cocktails and – of course – tequila galore. With the weather we’ve been having lately, this is set to be one authentic fiesta. Who needs those expensive South American holidays when you’re an Amsterdammer, eh?
