Amsterdam Weekend Guide – June 16-18
We’re all set for another scorcher in Amsterdam this weekend, so we’ve got plenty of outdoor-indoor events that make the most of the sunshine.
Delve behind the canal houses to discover Amsterdam’s secret gardens, pick up some quality vintage, celebrate the start of the herring season or experience competetive painting at its finest. It’s all happening this weekend in Amsterdam, so read on to find out more.
Open Garden Days
Look at an aerial photograph of Amsterdam, and you’ll see that a sizeable chunk of the canal ring is taken up by lush gardens. Sadly for us minions, most of these green spaces are hidden away behind tall canal houses for most of the year: secret sanctuaries for lucky residents. Until Open Garden Days that is, when, for one weekend a year, the gates to around 30 of Amsterdam’s normally private gardens are flung open for all to enjoy. It’s a chance to discover a side of Amsterdam rarely seen by the public, and experience the green, serene, secret world that lies beyond the cobbles and canal house facades. One ticket gets you access to all gardens for three days.

VinoKilo: Not just a vintage sale
Rummage through racks and rails of quality vintage clothes and pay by the kilo at this pop-up vintage fair taking place this Saturday. Setting up in the old school building that’s now trendy Amsterdam hotspot De School, this fashion bonanza offers the chance to shop for an unlimited supply of carefully chosen vintage clothes from the 60s-90s while enjoying some chilled out music, food and drinks. The supplies will be continually replenished throughout the day, so you can take your fill of fashion again and again (and again).
Celebrate the start of the new herring season by throwing some raw ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’ down your neck at this street party hosted by Westerpark fish restaurant De Gouden Hoek. If you’ve never tried Dutch herring then now’s your chance to get it at its sweetest as the first catch of the season is released from its barrels. Try it on its own or in a ‘lekker broodje’ with pickles and onions, and wash it down with some Dutch jenever, tasty local beer and live music by Bluegrass trio Leadbeaters. If you miss the catch at De Gouden Hoek on Saturday, then head to The Seafood Bar on Sunday for more new herring served with G&Ts and good vibes. ‘Eet smakelijk’, as the Dutchies say!
