Amsterdam Weekend Guide: February 9-11
Hello, and here I am back once again with the ill-behaving. Or not. But certainly back once again with some cracking events for you to fill up your social calendar with. Get scribbling and enjoy.
This week we’ve got some awesome African beats, a screening of a classic film that demands repeat viewing, some cheesy music events, some uber-cool music events, and the chance to fill up your shelves with a few new novels.
On the Corner Soundsystem @ Pllek
For those of you who have already had the pleasure of visiting NDSM Wharf’s magnificently laidback Pllek, you’ll know just what it’s about. For those that haven’t, it’s basically a hip post-industrial retreat constructed from old shipping containers and boasting one of the best panoramic views of the River IJ and its banks, with a vibe best described as ‘bohemian bustle’. That suits OnTheCorner Soundsystem’s ethos perfectly, as it was born from the label’s long-running collaboration with Santuri, a platform for new music from East Africa and beyond. With Gioumanne, PÅL/SECAM and the Soundsystem’s Pete and David performing, expect to hear African dance music, disco, rumba, psych-soul, funk and more at this unmissable night.

Pan’s Labyrinth @ LAB 111
If you haven’t already seen Guillermo Del Toro’s truly ground-breaking fantasy epic ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, then there probably isn’t a better time to do so – considering that the director’s new film ‘The Shape of Water’ (13 Oscar nominations!) is about to hit cinemas. If you have then there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t watch it again – as it’s no less spectacular with repeat viewings. Telling the story of Ofelia dealing with good and evil and set during Franco’s bloody regime in Spain, don’t miss this chance to see Del Toro’s singular vision on the big screen again.

Jackmaster’s Winter Circus Thuishaven
There’s a good reason that Jack Revill – AKA Jackmaster – is regularly featured at the top of lists highlighting the ‘best DJs in the world’. With little time for pretension, he’s as likely to be smashing out a trance classic as he is to release your new favourite act on his label Colours. Curating this special Winter Circus night at Thuishaven, he’s picked a line-up of only the best beatmakers and producers, including himself (naturally), Optimo and Tom Trago, who will all play b2b.

Het Amsterdamse Carnaval Spektakel!
This night in Amsterdam offers you the chance to dance like no one else is looking to all of your guilty pleasures: think the best and baddest of the 80s, 90s, 00s and beyond. As well as cheesy hits, power ballads, disco and house, there will be plenty of costumes and confetti. The only rule is that ‘everyone must misbehave’.
ABC Sidewalk Sale @ De Hallen
Visit De Hallen on Saturday to find American Book Centre’s Winter Book Fair. The Spui-based bookstore is cleaning out its warehouse, meaning there will be thousands of English language books on sale for as little as €5. The perfect chance to discover your new favourite novel at bargain prices, this first event for 2018 will also feature a raft of books for children. And if you have any unwanted books, you can pop them in the BetterWorldBook boxes that ABC staff will bring along on the day.
