Amsterdam Weekend Guide – December 8-10

Always driven by a good story… before beginning his adventure in Amsterdam, Alex worked as a broadcast journalist for the BBC in his home city of Manchester, and then spent several years as a senior reporter for the Manchester Evening News, where he went on to manage the newspaper’s video department. You’ll either find him in a bar supping some potent Dutch brews, discovering new places to eat and be merry, or cycling around Amsterdam still deliriously happy he lives in such an amazing place.

It might be the time of year when everyone’s building up to one certain big day (on December 25, in case you didn’t get it). But before that there’s still plenty of events and activities taking place in Amsterdam which you really shouldn’t miss.

So this week we’ve got an amazing free fashion festival event, a brunch with Audrey Hepburn, A (whisper it) Christmas market where you could find that perfect gift idea, a great gig and a film festival which is working to help improve lives around the world.

Fashion Fest Finale

Tropenmuseum Amsterdam

Get a glimpse of the fashion of the future at the forward-thinking ‘fashion fest’ contest. You will see the work of 64 innovative talents modelled on the catwalk in the museum’s monumental Light Hall. All of the work has been inspired by the collections of the Tropenmuseum and the exhibition ‘Fashion Cities Africa’. What’s best, attending the finale of this competition – a co-creation between MAFB, Tropenmuseum and Research Center for Material Culture – is completely free. All you need to do is pay for entrance to the museum.

Brunch and Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Brunch at Tiffany's Amsterdam

What better way to finish a beautiful brunch than enjoying Breakfast at Tiffany’s. You see, every month Lab111 serves up a modern or future classic movie straight after their brunch menu. That means you can fill up on something tempting at their Strangelove restaurant – including eggs benedict and an array of broodjes (sandwiches) – and then head straight through to enjoy the Oscar-winning classic starring Audrey Hepburn. Maybe you can even head in with a mimosa in hand, exactly as you’d expect she would have wanted it.

Sissy-Boy Christmas market

Sissy-Boy Christmas Market Amsterdam

The Sissy-Boy Christmas market on the Amstelveld offers shopaholics everything that they could ever ask for from a market to help kick off the festive season. That means an array of big brands (and some you might not know but should), all at prices which means you’ll still have plenty of money left over to buy presents. As well as that, to help feel really Christmassy there will be the chance to pick up some decorations – think Christmas balls and jingle bells – mulled wine for the big ones and lemonade for the little ones.

Destroyer at Paradiso Noord

Destroyer Amsterdam

Almost impossible to categorise, Dan Bejar’s Destroyer seem to shift between genres quicker than they release songs. Whether it’s baroque pop or rampaging, Wizzard-style glam rock, Bejar – formerly of New Pornographers – can do it. What’s more impressive is these forays into different sounds and styles are nearly always successful. Despite a run of three pretty brilliant albums in the last few years, Destroyer still remain somewhat of a cult secret. Use that to your advantage by taking the chance to see them when they play Amsterdam’s intimate Tolhuistuin. Check out Amsterdam’s other great gigs on Saturday 9 December.

IQMF Film FestivalIQMF Amsterdam

Though it runs from 6-10 December, during the weekend is when you’ll find some of the best events that are taking place during the International Queer & Migrant film festival (IQMF).  Focusing on queer and migrant-related films, each year more than 40 features, shorts and documentaries from around the world are screened. You can also discover an array of art exhibitions and literature and theatre events throughout the festival’s programme. The festival also highlights issues surrounding international human rights, topics which are debated rigorously at its various debates, panel talks, masterclasses and parties.
