Amsterdam Weekend Guide – December 15-17
It’s the most wonderful time of the yeeeeaaarrr… Ahem, excuse us. But of course it is that time, and, let’s face it, Christmas is all everyone is thinking about and planning for at the moment.
That means this week we’ve compiled a list of events which we think are just perfect for getting you in the Christmas spirit. We have a rooftop market where you can have a go at curling, which sounds as brilliant as it probably is, as well as a free performance by some amazing choirs, a concert at which you can enjoy some of your favourite Christmas film music and, just to take the edge off, a comedy night dissecting President Trump’s political career so far.
Floor17 Rooftop Xmas Market & Curling Weekend
Enjoy an experience to truly lift you up this winter at the highest Christmas market in the Netherlands (their words, not ours). Whether that’s true or not, this free event transforms the roof of the Ramada Hotel into a hub which hosts an abundance of fun festive activities, including the chance – armed with only a broom and willpower – to test your mettle in an actual game of curling. After that why not settle in front of the fireplace, enjoy amazing views of Amsterdam and relax with some delicious snacks and a glühwein, hot chocolate or Christmas cocktail. There’s also a host of free children’s activities, and plenty of chance to grab some gifts for all your friends and family.
Christmas Carols at the National Opera & Ballet
If you’ve already started to see a theme emerging in this weekend’s selections then we salute you (though it was quite obvious). If you haven’t then, basically, Christmas. Yes, it’s that time of year – and is there anything more magical than the sound of children singing some of your favourite carols. Especially when you get to see said children grouped in a choir and performing at one of Amsterdam’s most magnificent music venues, all alongside the Choir of the National Opera. Expect We Wish you a Merry Christmas, The Little Drummer Boy, Dashing through the Snow, and probably some tears.
There’s not much better settings in the city than the beautiful Museumplein. Against a backdrop of some of Amsterdam’s most beguiling museums and architecture this vast public space offers visitors the chance to take some time out and just enjoy watching the world go by. To make a trip there even more tempting, the monthly design-focused Museum Market will host its special Christmas edition on Sunday. Featuring fashion, accessories, textiles, homewares, jewellery and stationery all crafted by local designers, there’ll also be plenty of places to fill up on some Dutch Christmas treats and see some live music.
Christmas Classics at the Movies
Everyone has at least one favourite Christmas film. And usually those films feature songs which are guaranteed to fill you with winter warmth. Led by skilled conductor Huba Hollókoi, The Südwestfalen Philharmonic Orchestra will play a stunning Christmas Concert packed with tunes from everyone’s favourite festive flicks, including Home Alone, Miracle on 23rd Street and – especially for the younger ones – Frozen.

Trump up the Volume
If you have seen Greg Shapiro’s absolutely brilliant viral video about Donald Trump and the Netherlands, then you’ll probably know what to expect from this hilarious show. A mix of stand-up comedy, improvisation, video and music, Trump Up the Volume analyses and dissects the President’s time in office so far. For those of us who aren’t ready to fully embrace the festive season, Pep Rosenfeld, Greg Shapiro and director Andrew Moskos’ sharp, insightful and very funny show might help. And even manages to see the funny side of a situation that almost no one could have predicted.
