Amsterdam Weekend Guide – December 1-3
The city might be a little colder and darker, but don’t worry: Amsterdam’s awesome cultural agenda will warm you right up this December!
This time, we’ve got a crafty art festival, an extra-special club event, Amsterdam Light Festival, a rockin’ cover band and a tribute to the music of Star Wars (just in time for The Last Jedi!)
The clue’s in the name with Meesterlijk, which translates to ‘masterly’ in English. The independent Amsterdam-based crafts fair is one big celebration of masterful arts and craftsmanship. An impressive number of design disciplines are covered, including unique ceramics, jewellery, artwork, furniture and more. But it’s not just the masters strutting their stuff, there’ll be plenty of up-and-coming designers present, too, meaning you might bump into the world’s next big designer! Whether you’re an artist looking to be inspired or simply an enthusiast looking to be wowed, there’s something for everyone at Meesterlijk.
John Williams’ music for Star Wars
Relive the music from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away with this concert. John Williams is undoubtedly one of the most famous composers in Hollywood, having written the soundtracks for blockbusters including Indiana Jones, Home Alone and Jaws. But without a doubt, his best-known music comes from his Star Wars compositions. The highly talented Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the composer’s most popular songs at this show.
It doesn’t matter if you grew up with the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy or you’re currently experiencing ‘Stars Wars’ for the first time with Disney’s new trilogy – there’s sure to be something for you here. And there’ll even be some renditions of the works that inspire Williams most, including compositions by Wagner and Gustav Holst.
Encore’s Five-Year Anniversary
One of Holland’s most popular hip-hop and R&B club nights, the high-octane Encore, is celebrating its five-year anniversary with this event. And fifth birthdays aren’t any old occurrence, so – as expected – they’re marking the occasion in style. Encore are taking over one of Amsterdam’s biggest arenas, AFAS Live. And with a venue that size, they need a line-up to match. Luckily they have just that: the roster includes the likes of Cardi B, Sevn Alias and Ronnie Flex.
Amsterdam Light Festival
Over 35 large-scale installations will light up the city’s streets and waterways at the fifth edition of Amsterdam Light Festival. As always, artists (international and Dutch alike) have put their creative brains in overdrive to craft breathtaking light sculptures around the Canal Ring, the River Amstel and other stunning locations. And for the first time ever, the magnificent Marineterrein Amsterdam will be alight for the land exhibition. There’ll even be top-notch artist talks, performances and readings. But the best way to see the installations is from the water. Head on over to our Amsterdam Light Festival page for highlights and canal tours.
Pink Floyd Tribute: One of These Days
Pink Floyd captivated the world with their progressive and innovative take on rock music, putting the era’s mushroom-haired pop bands to shame with sonic experimentation, extended compositions and philosophical lyrics. One of These Days are a Pink Floyd tribute band whose passion for the original band is immediately apparent. So get ready to shout along to classics such as ‘Another Brick in the Wall’, ‘Us and Them’, ‘Wish You Were Here’ and more at this spectacular show. Not your thing? Check out Amsterdam’s other great gigs on Saturday 2 December.
